“Taken By a Red Flower”

We were so pleased when Carol Berg agreed to join us as an editor for Heron Tree volume 5, and we thank her for her careful judgment and deliberation over the past year. We also offer you her poem, “Taken By a Red Flower,” a response to a painting by Egon Schiele. It begins:

The meadow is spattered with small drops of green
and crowds of red flowers. The trees look like they are holding

each other’s hands while they dance—trunks akimbo,
like hips, heads like a halo of clouds thrown back.
